Gear reviews

Hey there. Welcome to my first gear review post! I’m not sure if there will be a theme to these reviews, or if I’m just going to talk about some stuff I bought and have used. I haven’t done one of these before, so I’m not too sure how in depth I’m going to get. Let’s get to it. I want to see what I’m going to do.

First though, I want to point out that some of these links are for REI where I have an affiliate account. My reviews are in no way biased because of that. All you do is click the link and should you buy the product, I get a little cut. It doesn’t cost you a penny more.

Let’s start with Smartwool socks. I’ve been wearing Smartwool socks for years now and let me tell you, they have gone way down hill in the quality department. I still own the first pair I ever bought, Smartwool hiking sock
. And they are still holding up fine. The next couple pair are doing okay. But anything from the last couple years have completely worn out.

Are you serious, Smartwool? I mean, your socks are like 20 dollars a pair. They should last longer than cheap socks from Target. But they don’t. I’m not sure where Smartwools are made these days, but the quality is gone.

I wanted to talk about my Golite Jam backpack. But they went into Chapter 11 and now it looks like their website is even down. This is sad news for light weight backpackers. And me.

I’ve used the same Jam pack for a few years now. It’s served me well in the little backpacking I’ve done. I’ve also used that pack on urban adventures and I love it. It weighs less than a pound, but doesn’t feel weak.

Another thing I’ve been rocking for years is my Exofficio Men’s Exo Dri Tee. I have 2 of these shirts, and while they are expensive they’re also really nice.

I like the wicking fabric that is tech without looking techy. It doesn’t have the sheen that most wicking shirts do. I think these shirts look like regular t shirts. Except the shoulder stitching is a little to the front to ease chaffing.

I’ve taken these shirts all over the country and ran a lot in them and they still look great. I will say this though. Order these a size or 2 small. I wear a medium in most brand’s t shirts, but these Ex Officio Dri shirts in small are a bit larger than I would usually wear.

I’m also going to at some point talk about the new underwear I bought. Ex Officio Give and Go boxers
We’re off to Costa Rica soon and I’m only bringing these 2 pair of underwear.

I’ve worn them around home, but nowhere near the level of 2 pair in Costa Rica for a week. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Other gear going to Costa Rica that I haven’t really had very long includes Nikon COOLPIX AW120 Waterproof Digital Camera which I’m excited to use snorkeling.

Speaking of snorkeling, I bought Shellie and I each a Phantom Aquatics Dry Snorkel We’re germaphobes and can’t use the ones they give you on tours.

Also I bought the Promate Optical Corrective Scuba Snorkeling Mask because I am damn near blind without my glasses.

I hope I like snorkeling.

I also ordered a pair of sunglasses from a website. I’ll talk more about that as the story unfolds. I just ordered them last night when it became apparent the pair I ordered from the first place weren’t coming.

Also, I bought Shellie and my son Mace each a CDT backpack from ULA. I have no affiliation with them other than as a customer. You should check them out. I’ll talk more about them later when we’ve had a chance to put them through the ringer.

So that’s it for my first gear post. Next time I swear there will be pictures to go with all these words.
